So a few weeks after talking to Cecily Strong about starring in the series, I spoke with Cinco Paul, who wrote all the songs. She co-anchored "Weekend Update" with Seth Meyers and then Colin Jost but stepped down, preferring to do sketch comedy. It just felt like, I've fallen through the cracks. And we just thought it was so funny, and it was a fun way to play her. And I'd go, well, tonight I'm going to either - I'll just keep driving. So, you know, I'm - I would love to do it. I rented every musical on VHS they . I did, like, a video for kids - for schools to show about kids with parents with drug and alcohol problems. The studio behind the project is Universal Television, with Lorne Michaels and Andrew Singer of Broadway Video. GROSS: So your character in "Schmigadoon!" I feel like my bubble just burst recently. And I think that the worst example is "Shipoopi" from "Music Man," which is - it brings everything to a grinding halt, and then this Marcellus character is just singing this nonsense song that has nothing to do with anything. And even on the tape - like, they do your expulsion hearings, and they're taping it. Like everyone on this list, we'll miss seeing her on "SNL," but we can't wait to follow her (and everyone else's) career! KEY: (As Josh Skinner) No. GROSS: And I wish her the best. She is best known for being a cast member of Saturday Night Live. And we both enjoy malapropisms, I think, as much as each other, so it's a lot of that. It kind of felt like that a little bit. Yeah. You know, I was much more protected. GROSS: He was dealing with a lot of mental health issues? I want you to talk about writing this because this is an example of a song that I don't think closely adheres to another song. Yeah. - where she sort of wishes he could be who he really is. And you're being, you know, waited on by a - you know, a very lovely, very young (laughter) waitress. And they embraced me. STRONG: No because it wasn't like they were not emotional thoughts, you know? We - Ken and I, you know, played music all the time when we were writing. And so in the spirit of turning your life into a musical, I just want to play the opening theme from your podcast, "Make Him Watch It. It's not something we're going to eradicate. And I guess there's also "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man Of Mine" (ph) - you know, these women who sing songs where, you know, he has maybe these flaws, but I still love him, you know? STRONG: You know, luckily, I have producers there and and Lorne, too, and I feel very taken care of by the show. STRONG: (As The Girl You Wish You Hadn't Started a Conversation With at a Party) Wow. And it's only recently that are - there are actually musicals about gay people who are out of the closet. So it was really important for the show to have that perspective. GROSS: Reports are that you're not sure whether you're going back to "SNL" in the fall. But the fun thing is that, ironically, in our show, it does move the story forward because this stupid song gets Keegan to say, OK, we're leaving (laughter). GROSS: How were you introduced to music of that period? And I was really, like, a kid who sort of wanted to stay under the radar, anyway. I've never caught him looking at other gals more young, petite or fine. And we wrote a sketch, actually, that didn't make it onto the show. But in eighth grade, he swallowed his bottle of Ritalin and had to get his stomach pumped and was in the psych ward, the children's psych ward, in Rush Hospital for a week.
